Lisbon is Europe's oldest city

On the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula in the centre of Portugal is its capital, Lisbon, the oldest city on the map of Europe.

The settlements on this place have been known since the Neolithic times. Many nations have visited and left their mark on it: Celts, Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Normans and many others.Modern Lisbon is the main port of the country. In the past, great geographical discoveries and colonial conquests began with it. Lisbon survived several devastating earthquakes, each time almost completely destroying the city. Many ancient architectural structures have not survived or have undergone later restructuring.Today the architecture of the city harmoniously combines various styles and offers curious tourists to see many places of interest famous around the whole world. This includes the São Jorge Castle, the Romanesque Lisbon Cathedral, the Carmo Convent, baroque and classicist palaces and much more. The heart of the cultural life of the Portuguese capital is the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. Popular places, which your city guide will definitely advise you to visit are the museums: the Electricity Museum, the Navy Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and the National Museum of Ancient Art.The city has an extensive network of public transport: a metro and numerous bus routes, and the ancient yellow tram of Lisbon is recognised as an unofficial city symbol. Several ferries have been built to cross the river.
